Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals
The Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals are the first international team event in men’s tennis. It is directed by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and Kosmos. This competition is disputed annually between teams from competing countries all around the world in a group phase followed by knock-out format and is portrayed by the organizers as the “World Cup of Tennis”.
“By becoming the global partner of Davis Cup, Rakuten has taken another important step forward in our mission to inspire and empower people across the globe. We are firm believers in the power of sport to bring people and communities together, and to inspire optimism and innovation.“ Hiroshi Mikitani

The challenge was to provide useful services
Kosmos had a clear vision of their needs. They wanted an interactive and engaging tennis experience for current and future fans. Undoubtedly, the main goal was to provide useful and entertaining services around the tournament and the host city – feeling the passion of the competition. How to address all these needs? Let’s see how Rakuten DX got it all together!
01

the team followed those 5 crucial phases: empathise, define, ideate, prototype, and test.

01
Design Thinking workshop: getting into the mobile’s app user mind
Rakuten DX rolled out a Design Thinking workshop, trying to find answers to questions such as: what are Davis Cup fans requirements, contexts, motivations, expectations, behaviors and tasks? To answer these, the team followed those 5 crucial phases: empathise, define, ideate, prototype, and test.
In the end, answers came up to address Davis Cup user’s needs: fan engagement with customized app according to the user’s desires (which country they support, news about their team etc.), web news and live-score notifications.
02
Personalized digital experience
There are many ways to show app users’ you value them, but personalization really goes a step further. Rakuten DX spent time personalizing Davis Cup fans mobile app for each specific user profile. Two tabs were created. With the first tab, they had the ability to adjust their content by selecting their team(s) preferences, and this led to a personalized content with all news relating to the team concerned. And, with the second tab they had all news assembled.
03
Live-score notifications
Live scoring is a great way to elevate the user experience for leagues by giving users real-time information. Rakuten DX made a live score feature for users to keep track on scores in a mobile friendly way with a large amount of options such as calendar, team, group and knockouts.

“It is astonishing the fact of being able to have the choice between a general list of articles and a list with the articles of the team that I support.”
